10 Weirdest Moments Of Hulk Hogan’s Career
Only a handful of wrestlers ever achieved the kind of success that Hulk Hogan did in his career. Hogan led the charge for WWE’s move into the mainstream to start their success as a pop culture hit and led WCW to pass WWE for record-breaking success during the Monday Night Wars.
Memorable moments are usually discussed when looking back at his wrestling career. However, there were downright strange things to feature him for better or worse. Every wrestler will find their way into unique scenarios and Hogan couldn’t avoid it no matter how much he was protected in the booking. Hulk delivered his fair share of weird moments that deserve another look today.
Dave Meltzer’s The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has been a controversial fixture for years in the industry. Many wrestlers of the past hated it for influencing readers to dislike their matches if it lacked the work rate or went against Meltzer’s personal tastes.
Hulk Hogan decided to take that to another level by burning a copy of it during a segment with Sting and Randy Savage. Meltzer accurately reporting a Savage injury led to Hogan claiming he was lying and decided to burn it on television. Savage worsened his injury by competing in the match, teaming with Hogan and Sting.
TNA is mocked for many of its worst moments, but there was a bizarre overlooked storyline involving Hulk Hogan. Abyss was the chosen one of Hogan both on-screen working together and behind the scenes running the show.
WCW came up with a few ridiculous storylines for Hulk Hogan during his first few years before the New World Order heel turn saved him. The worst idea featured the Dungeon of Doom faction consisting of monster heel gimmicks challenging Hogan.
One of the promos to show Hogan answering the Dungeon featured him wearing a black outfit and a black face mask. Hogan also held a sword and declared that he was going to find the “dark side” of Hulkamania to defeat the hated faction.
Hulk Hogan turning heel to lead the New World Order made him drastically change his identity. The former face became one of the best villains in wrestling history. Fans often threw trash in the ring during Hogan’s promos out of hatred for his antics.
One fan almost went further when cameras caught an older woman in the front row upset with the legend. Hogan confronted her before seeing her swing in comedic fashion. Security was there and cracked a smile at the non-threatening but odd situation.
WWE putting a mask on their most well-known star felt like a strange move in 2003, but there was some entertainment value from Hulk Hogan as Mr. America. The storyline was that Vince McMahon fired Hogan and he returned with the new persona to get one over on the boss.
Vince enacted a lie detector test to put Mr. America on the spot in hopes of him being caught. Mr. America passed the lie detector, saying he was not Hogan much to McMahon’s chagrin. The segment somehow ended with Vince getting caught revealing he looked at Torrie Wilson’s Playboy photoshoot during all his free time.
WCW could not make the most out of the signing of Ultimate Warrior to feud with Hulk Hogan. The segments were ridiculous and caused fans to lose interest in the match. Warrior playing mind games and having supernatural powers dominated the story.
Hogan was implied to be losing his mind when the cameras showed him seeing Warrior when looking in a mirror even though Eric Bischoff didn’t. Fans seeing the mirage of Warrior made it more confusing and just a strange way to set up a huge match.
At the end of the heel run for Hulk Hogan in WCW, fans finally grew tired of the New World Order. WCW’s attempt of reuniting the nWo Elite ended after a few months with Hogan reverting to the old face character.
A young Nick Hogan appeared backstage with his dad, asking to bring back the old beloved hero. Nick handed Hulk the red and yellow gear to give fans Hulkamania again. WCW went an odd way of changing Hogan instead of keeping it simple.
The feud for Hulk Hogan against the Dungeon of Doom showed WCW trying to make him vulnerable against a group of heels. Kevin Sullivan led the group with various dastardly acts to embarrass and diminish Hogan.
WCW tried to make it a huge moment when Sullivan used a pair of clippers to shave Hogan’s mustache. The segment was treated as a serious act, but it missed the mark since his mustache would grow back in time for the next match.
Hulk Hogan shocked the world when he left WWE in 1993 to end his run as the face of the company for almost a decade. The final match of Hogan’s run came at King of the Ring 1993 when losing the WWE Championship to Yokozuna.
Hogan refused to lose matches cleanly, and it led to a strange finish. A cameraman snapped a picture from the apron that blinded Hogan with a fireball flash. Yokozuna took advantage of the blinded Hogan to steal the victory and the title.
WCW grew a bit sloppy in 1998 when the first signs of a decline started to show. Hulk Hogan took some time off after an eventful year dropping the WCW Championship to Goldberg, working with celebrities, and feuding with Ultimate Warrior.
The story to write him off television featured Hogan claiming he had a massive announcement. Hogan’s news was that he was planning to run for President of the United States in 2000 and needed time off for his campaign. It was just a foolish idea that didn’t have a payoff since Hogan returned two months later.
