The WWE is reportedly in talks with wrestling royalty ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin about potentially making his long-awaited comeback at WrestleMania 38 this year.

Stone Cold, a man who is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time, called time on his decorated career back in 2003 following a string of knee and neck injuries. But according to Fightful Select, the WWE has “made an overture” to bring him out of retirement for the biggest show of the year in his home state of Texas.

Dave Meltzer is reporting that Kevin Owens could be his opponent for his return tale too. If the WWE do somehow pull this off, it would be Austin’s first match since WrestleMania XIX where he lost to The Rock.

A true pioneer of the sport, Stone Cold is remembered fondly for his iconic goatee, impressive beer-drinking skills, foul language and – of course – his hatred of WWE boss Vince McMahon. Oh, and his ability inside the ring wasn’t too bad either, winning multiple world titles and being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009.

If the then-WWF was looking for a poster boy for the late-90s Attitude Era, the Texas Rattlesnake was the man for the job. His rivalries with fellow legends The Rock, Kurt Angle, Triple H, The Undertaker and Bret Hart will live long in the memories of wrestling fans for some time.

However, at 57 years of age, a second coming seems very unlikely. That said, who knows what will happen? We’ve seen WrestleMania play host to some legendary comebacks in the past, most notably Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who returned to join forces with John Cena at WrestleMania 32.

The Rock is also tipped to headline next year’s WrestleMania event against Roman Reigns in Los Angeles.
