Vince McMahon and Sting

Vince McMahon has taken credit for taking Sting from obscurity to being an attraction. The controversial comment was made in McMahon’s conference call in which he touted WrestleMania as a success.

McMahon commented that WWE had taken Sting from obscurity to being a major attraction, via the marketing power of the company.

The comment clearly ignored the fact that Sting brought a huge reputation in with him, having been a major star in WCW and most recently an attraction in TNA. Obviously TNA is nowhere near as big as WWE, but McMahon’s “obscurity” wording was particularly harsh.

It was also personally harsh to Sting, basically saying that his WCW legacy doesn’t exist. From the sounds of it, McMahon sees Sting as a guy from nothing who then got given meaning from WWE to go on and headline a WrestleMania show. Perhaps Sting is now already wishing he never signed with WWE.

The former WCW star was always so revered for having not worked with WWE. He has now came in to the company, only to do a job for Triple H and hear his past described as “obscurity” by WWE’s Chairman.

This wasn’t the grand comeback that Sting fans envisioned for the former WCW great. It remains to be seen if he’ll be working any more matches for WWE, and he appeared to hint at in-ring retirement in comments to the associated press over the weekend.
