WWE is saddened to learn that legendary Superstar and icon has passed away as a result of long illness and kidney failure.

Former WWF World Heavyweight Championship challenger Larry ‘The Axe’ Hennig has passed away. He was 82 years old when death knocked on his door.

WWE Raw Superstar Curtis Axel pays tribute to his late grandfather, Larry ‘The Axe’ Hennig Passes Away owing to health issues.

Larry “The Axe” Hennig passes away, WWE makes official statement as detailed below:

WWE is saddened to learn that legendary Superstar and Hennig family patriarch Larry “The Axe” Hennig passed away today at 82 years old following a long illness and kidney failure.

A five-time tag team champion in the AWA, Hennig entered the sports-entertainment world under the tutelage of Verne Gagne and crossed paths with some of the most illustrious performers of all time. Most famously, Hennig was among Bruno Sammartino’s challengers for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the hallowed halls of Madison Square Garden.

Though his own career was cut short due to injury, Hennig’s legacy spanned another two generations thanks to his son, the late WWE Hall of Famer Mr. Perfect, and grandson, former Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel.

Widely regarded as one of the toughest men in wrestling, Hennig retired in 1985. His son Curt (AKA ‘Mr. Perfect’) had been born 27 years prior, and he is survived by current WWE Superstar Curtis Axel (one of Larry’s 28 grandchildren).

The news of Hennig’s death was first broken by journalist Mike Mooneyham, who posted the following on Twitter, also Axel tweeted the following tribute:-

Larry ‘The Axe’ Hennig will certainly go down as one of the all-time greatest Professional Wrestlers to grace the square circle and the industry in overall and Hennig’s impact on the entire Pro Wrestling business has certainly been a great one.
