Vince McMahon Accused Of Sabotaging ECW Reboot

Vince McMahon ran WWE for decades, but he never particularly cared about competition. WWE would try to revive ECW, but it would ultimately fail without much success.

Following the collapse of ECW, McMahon was accused of intentionally sabotaging the ECW reboot.

Under the leadership of Paul Heyman, ECW developed into a reliable alternative to WCW and his WWE in the 1990s.

McMahon eventually bought the company and reintroduced ECW as a WWE show in 2006.

While speaking with Brisco and Bradshaw on The Story, ECW legend Sabu claimed that Vince McMahon intentionally reduced his use of weapons in ECW because he wanted the show to fail.

The original ECW rose to fame with a devoted fan base, with some viewers willing to provide wrestlers with weapons to use in their matches.

Sabu explained that in contrast to Vince McMahon’s desire to make the show resemble RAW and SmackDown, Paul Heyman’s ECW is more focused on fan interaction.

Most people who were used to ECW, we had almost every match an extreme match-up,” Sabu said.

“I don’t agree with that, but you need at least one no-rules match on the show. We’d do [WWE] shows with no hardcore matches, no tables, no chairs.

Not even one match. And that’s because of Vince trying to kill it on purpose.”

Many fans were ultimately disappointed that WWE’s reboot of ECW did not live up to expectations and continued the tradition of the original ECW.

Either way, promotions like GCW are continuing the ECW tradition, and fans couldn’t be happier.
