According to fresh reports, Nikki, 34, was sick of being made to feel like she was dragging a reluctant John down the aisle kicking and screaming. John Cena having been previously married to Elizabeth Huberdeau from 2009 until 2012, he had been open about his reluctancy to get hitched again.

Nikki’s struggle to get him to commit played out in all its glory on their show reality Total Divas, where John told her outright that babies were off the cards.

“I do want to be a mum,” she told him in 2013, admitting, “I feel like I’d be missing out.” But he refused to budge, telling his then-girlfriend, “I’m going to choose my words carefully. I can’t give you that.”

So no-one was more shocked than Nikki when he proposed in front of thousands of fans in 2017, and she admitted she would fast-track the service if he started to have second thoughts.

“I waited so long to get engaged and now I’m just happy being a fiancée,” she told Mirror Online. “Unless I start to think that John is getting cold feet then maybe I’ll rush it. I’ll be like ‘let’s get married tomorrow!’ But we’re just so happy to be engaged and I have a lot of great things happening in my life that everything just seems perfect.”

However, they postponed the wedding last October due to ‘schedules’, and in March John hinted he was pretty removed from the whole thing. “I was able to let Nicole plan the bachelorette party and she just finished that. And now I’m just kind of on standby to know when it is and where it is, and I’ll be there,” he told Jimmy Fallon.

And in the run-up to their big day, a source said he cooled even further. “He talked a really good game about having changed, about having his priorities straight, about knowing what’s important, and that it was her. But as the day got closer, it was like he just went back to who he’s always been,” a second insider claimed to People.

“He’s an incredibly dedicated, driven, ambitious guy. And for the longest time he said he didn’t think he had room in his life for a spouse or kids. It seems like in the end that was still the truth.

“But in that case, he never should’ve proposed, let alone in front of millions of people. Now she’s heartbroken.”
